Penile implant surgery is the procedure followed when individuals with erectile dysfunction do not respond to treatment with medication. Penile implant surgery is for individuals who experience erectile dysfunction or impotency. This procedure aims to eliminate the problems in question. These problems are seen in 52% of men between the ages of 40-70. Erectile dysfunction usually occurs due to vessel stiffness, diabetes, hypertension, nervous system disorders, hormonal disorders, vascular system disorders, liver and kidney failure, and certain psychological conditions. In addition to these health problems, certain medications, smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, and physical injuries may also cause erectile dysfunction. With the help of penile implant surgery, it is now possible to eliminate this problem.
Types of Penile Implants
A penile implant is used if the patient’s response to medication does not meet the expectations. Before this procedure, patients undergo certain medical examinations. Erectile dysfunction have a negative impact on men’s sexual life. The level of erection may not be enough for vaginal penetration. Even when erection is achieved, the penis may lose its firmness in a short time. The age factor which amplifies the problem further shortens this already short time. Since erectile dysfunction cannot be cured with medication or vessel surgeries, the need for a penile implant arises. Before penile implant surgery, the patient undergoes certain blood tests and a penile blood flow test. Whether the patient is eligible for penile implant surgery or not is determined with the test in which a special medication is injected into the penis for erectile dysfunction and pain that occurs in this area. Depending on the condition of the patient, 2 types of penile implants can be used:
- A malleable penile implant allows the patient to stay erect constantly. As the name implies, it can flex and bend.
- Inflatable penile implants consist of a mechanism that can be inflated and deflated. These implants are composed of 2-3 pieces.
While a malleable penile implant allows the patients to be erect constantly, it can be said that they do not offer a natural appearance. On the other hand, inflatable penile implants provide this natural appearance with their inflatable functions.
Penile Implant Surgery
The most preferred type is the inflatable implants. These surgeries can be performed under general or local anesthesia. Local anesthesia means that only a certain area is numbed. In penile implant surgery, the lower body is anesthetized. It would be beneficial to have a consultation with the surgeon prior to the surgery. No problems occur so long as the patient follows the instructions of the surgeon. Before the surgery, the area in question is cleaned thoroughly with a variety of special substances. Highly strong antibiotics are administered into the penis. These antibiotics must be used for 2 days following the surgery. The surgery takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on the type of implant to be placed into the patient’s penis. The duration of hospital stay may change depending on the pain that the patient experience or the condition of the wound. It can take up to 5 days. Depending on the condition of the patient, the surgeon might change this duration. The surgery must be performed in a hygienic environment in the hospital. The patient must be at least 20 years old to be able to undergo penile implant surgery. From that point, any patient over the age of 20 can undergo penile implant surgery. As long as the patient does not have severe health problems or conditions that hamper being anesthetized, he can be considered as a good candidate for this surgery.
Penile implant surgery allows patients to have a better sexual life. As long as the implant is placed properly, no problem occurs during sexual intercourse.
Although penile implant surgery is a quite simple surgery, there are some instructions that need to be followed after the surgery. As long as the patient follows them, they will go through a fast recovery period without any problem.
- Since there might be wounds in the area, the patient must protect the area and keep it away from contacting water for a week after getting discharged from the hospital.
- Patients are restricted from sexual intercourse for at least 4 weeks until the surgeon allows.
- The patient should keep follow-up appointments.
- To avoid any problems occurring while sleeping, the patient should mind his sleeping position and should sleep in a supine position.
- There might be slight pain and itchiness in the area.
- If the patient experiences problems such as high fever, persistent and severe pains, discharge, swelling, and redness in the penis area, and is unable to pass urine, they must consult his surgeon.
The biggest complication of penile implant surgery is infection. The penis is protected from being infected with strong antibiotics. The patient takes antibiotics for at least 3 days following the surgery. The risk of infection is higher for individuals who have diabetes or spinal cord problems. To avoid infection, the patients should be cautious and follow the instructions of the surgeon.
Penile implant surgery varies depending on the procedure to be performed. The cost also varies by the surgeon and the hospital. People who do not have serious health conditions can undergo this surgery.
